Q. Are there any styles that would help protect my daughter from lice? She's about to start school so I want her protected as best I can.

Head lice are a cause for concern. The preventions are few, speculations rampant, and cures almost non existent. I advise moms to be ever vigilant in keeping eyes and ears open to maintain the health of their children’s hair.
First be sure to check your child’s hair and scalp. If anything looks unusual a gnat or bug, you have probably come face to face with an adult louse.
If you see something that looks like dandruff and is hard to remove with the finger nail or comb adhering to the hair strand you have discovered a nit.
The life cycle of lice is nit, nymph and louse.
Aside from purchasing and using a louse removal kit. Over the counter or a referral from the doctor. You will need to change bed clothes of every bed in your house. Wash them in hot water. Disinfect all combs, brushes or any other hair accessories by soaking them in a disinfectant. Be sure to put all caps , head band , scarves etc worn by child in a plastic bag and keep it airtight for 7-10 days. Same thing goes for favorite pillows, stuffed toys , teddy bears etc.>
The only symptom is usually a itchy scalp. Be careful to notice any changes. Any notes or notices from school or daycare concerning an infection or outbreak is cause to check every family members hair and scalp.

When you check scalp and hair remember that the bug may be hard to see, move quickly and resemble a gnat. The nit or egg looks a bit like dandruff maybe a little lighter in color. To tell the difference try scrapping the dandruff off with nail if it does not move it is Head lice have been around since the beginning of recorded time. . Head lice do not come from the dirt or air or spontaneous generation. Head lice come from other head lice, just like every other species. Head lice are contracted by head-to-head contact with an infested person or through contact with that person''''s belongings. You can not get head lice from pets. A hatched nit needs a human blood meal within 45 minutes to survive. Head lice like clean, healthy heads the best9. If you have been exposed to head lice, check your head every few days for 3-4 weeks to make sure you are not infested. There are a couple of good home remedies

Olive Oil saturation over night with plastic securely over the hair. I have also heard that hair setting gel over night just like the Olive Oil will kill most adult lice. Next morning use a nit comb ( purchased from chemist) or online. Use the nit comb to remove nits. Repeat these treatments two to three times weekly. It is best to continue these treatments for at least 3-4 weeks. Pediculicides - the shampoos and creme rinses used to treat head lice - are no longer considered 100% effective. If a pediculicide did not work the first time, it is unlikely that more treatments will be effective. If you use a pediculicide, follow the directions on the package carefully and never use more than the recommended dose or leave it on the head longer than directed Never use products containing Lindane, a powerful neurotoxin banned for use in the United Kingdom and given a thumbs down by Consumer Reports.

Sofn’free makes a styling gel that would be good to try. Also Gro Healthy Olive and Soybean Oil is available at Leading Afro Stores and on the web at M&M Cosmetics

The Centers of Disease Control recommend against using any lice sprays because of the danger to small pets and children. Besides the danger, lice sprays contain pyrethrin which is no longer effective in killing head lice. Smothering head lice with olive oil is an excellent treatment option for eliminating pediculicide-resistant head lice. Manual nit picking is a necessary part of any lice treatment program.
